Ants in a Pile

Ant colonies are often spoken of as “superorganisms” on account of their eusocial ability to function as a unified whole to accomplish amazing things. While some ants are known to aggregate into rafts in order to float on water these unknown ants were gathered into a ball, for some unknown reason, just outside their hole in the ground. Who are they, what are they doing and why???
