Celebrating and Caring for the Land

Female Northern Flicker

Colaptes auratus are large ground-foraging woodpeckers, their brown speckled feathers are good camouflage in the leaf litter. This female lacks the characteristic red mustache of the male, but will flash the same bright red/orange wing and tail feathers as she flies away. (Click image for larger versions)

Good soaked-earth mornin to ya, Jim! I love getting your posts THANK YOU! I wonder if you meant to say “red mustache” on the male flicker? (I think of it as lipstick gone astray 🥰)
Anyway, your photos and love for the beings on the mountain bring me much joy!
