Cyclosa conica, like other “Orb Weavers,” construct a circular grid web then also build up a vertical line of debris including the carcasses of former prey. The purpose of these lines of trash, called “stabilimentum,” may include attracting insects, alerting birds to avoid tearing through the web and creating a structure in which to camouflage and lay in wait. Females mend the web on a daily basis and will hide their egg mass in the trashline as well. (Click image for larger versions)
