Pisolithus arhizus, also known as “Dyeball Fungus” or “Dog Turd Fungus” is an ectomycorrhizal associate often found in relationship to our Coast Live Oaks. Unlike a lot of other fungi it sends up its fruiting body full of spores in the heat of the dry summertime. There are thought to be 11 species of Pisolithus world wide, they are inedible but are often utilized as a dye for wool.
