Celebrating and Caring for the Land

What’s A Shrew?

While they’re commonly lumped in with the other small pestiferous creatures in our minds, shrews are not closely related to rodents and are no real threat to your garden. More closely related to moles, they belong to their own family, Soricidae, and several species may be found in Sonoma County. In their world, they are voracious predators capable of eating twice their body weight per day. They use their keen sense of smell and sensitive whiskers to rummage through the undergrowth foraging for prey and some are also known to use a kind of eco-location to find their way through their habitat.
