Puffballs

There are thought to be at least a couple dozen species of “puffball” fungus in California, all important saprotrophic decomposers, cycling dead organic material and building humus in the soil. Puffballs are also a favorite protein-rich food source for many animals including, deer, elk, squirrels, chipmunks, mice, rats, slugs, snails and numerous insects.
