Cercis occidentalis, also known as “California redbud”, is a welcomed splashy magenta sign of spring, their flowers are a significant source of nectar for native bees and hummingbirds as well as sweet/tart edible addition to your salad. Their (pea family) seed pods, which are also edible when green, are persistent and hang on through the winter before falling away.
