Aristolochia californica is a perennial woody vine endemic to Northern California and can be found creeping or vining around riparian, chaparral and woodland areas. The pipe-shaped flowers emit a musty smell that attracts fungus gnats into the flower where stiff little hairs prevent the gnats’ escape. After a few days, the hairs relax and the gnats, now carrying the flower’s pollen, are released and move on to pollinate other flowers.
