Building Burrowing Owl Habitat

While Burrowing Owls (Athene cunicularia) are still present in Sonoma County during winter months, it’s thought that none have bred here in over 25 years due to habitat loss. They depend on abandoned underground burrows dug by mammals like badgers and ground squirrels. There is a growing movement to build and provide artificial burrows in hopes of restoring a local breeding population.
