Anas platyrhynchos, also known as the “Wild Duck” can be found throughout most of the northern hemisphere, it is the ancestor of most domestic ducks and has hybridized with more than 40 species of duck in the wild. The mallard can take off almost vertically from water or land, they can fly nearly 70 mph and there is record of one striking an airplane at 21,000 ft.
