Hypoxylon Canker

This fungal disease occurs when a stressed or weakened tree attracts certain beetles who carry Hypoxylon spores from the last infected tree. The beetles begin tunneling through and inoculating the wood, creating a labyrinth of tunnels lined with hypoxylon, upon which they then feed. Beetles transport the fungus to new food sources and the fungus feeds the beetles…symbiosis…gardening.
