Mountain Gartersnake

Thamnophis elegans elegans, also known as the “Terrestrial Gartersnake”, is one of 8 species (and 14 subspecies) of Gartersnakes found in California. With three stripes running down the length of the body, one down the back and two along the sides against a plain black or brown, with no red. Seen near a pond and in no mood to pose for a proper portrait.
