Snakes may shed their skin several times a year, this process (ecdysis) allows them to repair damaged parts of their skin as well as remove parasites. They seek things like rocks and sticks to rub against and help remove the outer layer. The scale pattern on each species is unique and skins can usually be identified to species by the pattern of the scales…this one seems like Gopher Snake…?
