Bull Thistle

Cirsium vulgare, also known as “spear thistle” is native to the Mediterranean area but has naturalized in many other parts of the world…and is the national flower of Scotland. While it can be invasive, the flowers are known to be prolific nectar producers and utilized by many species when other flowers have already passed. This one lost its original stalk and in response produced this tight cluster of flowers.
