Common Buckeye

Junonia coenia is commonly found in the California coastal grasslands as well as most of the continental U.S. apart from the Pacific Northwest. Flashing its colorful eyespots on the dorsal wing surface may deter predators while closing its wings, showing the pale brown ventral side, helps it blend in to the leafy background.
