While this is most likely a type of Sphinx Moth larvae, it’s not clear which one (?). There is a rare and threatened species that looks very similar called the “Kern Primrose Sphinx Moth” but it’s mostly known to occur around the Carrizo Plain area. This one was seen wandering around in open grassland, here perched on a “Hairy Cat’s-ear” (Hypochaeris radicata).
