Willow Leaf Galls

While these galls are likely caused by a sawfly, there are many other insects that also cause gall formation on willow leaves. A female sawfly lays her eggs in the tissues of developing leaves and the plant is triggered to produce this characteristic growth around the developing sawfly larva. When the larva is ready to pupate it will burrow out of the gall, drop to the ground and develop its cocoon hidden in the soil.
