Fecal Sac Removal

Young Tree Swallows developing in the nest envelope their waste in a mucous membrane which parents can grab with their mouth and carry away. It’s believed that by removing the fecal sacs as well as the used egg shells they keep their nests from being smelly and attracting pests and predators. These parents carry the fecal sac away to be dropped into the nearby pond…then return with another mouthful.
