Cicadas

There are dozens of species of Cicada in California, they spend most of their life underground as far as 8 ft. deep typically sipping on tree root “sap”. Upon emerging they shed their exoskeleton (below) and begin looking to mate (above). In many cultures the song of the cicada marks the beginning of summer and an important seasonal protein source!
